Personal advice
Hardly any subject gets put off for as long as this one. Yet in most cases the answer is unspectacular: for children and teenagers with a misalignment that needs treating, health insurance covers the greater part.

How things stand in your case is something we will tell you after the examination – in writing, in plain language and without small print.

For children and teenagers: what health insurance covers

Whether a treatment is covered by your health insurance is not decided by the practice but by a classification that applies across Germany: the KIG grades. We carry out this classification after the examination and explain what it means for your child. Which findings we treat is set out on the page for children and teenagers.
1
We examine and classify
The findings are assigned to one of the five KIG grades (Kieferorthopädische Indikationsgruppen, the German orthodontic indication groups).
2
From grade 3, health insurance pays
For children and teenagers it then covers the greater part of the treatment.
3
You know where you stand beforehand
Before treatment starts you receive a written plan – and confirmation of cover from your health insurer.
For patients with statutory health insurance, the severity of the misalignment of teeth and jaws (the KIG classification) determines whether the greater part of the costs is paid by the insurer. For most of the young patients who come to us, that is the case. If the classification does not come out at 3, 4 or 5, we will talk with you about whether and to what extent you would like orthodontic treatment for your child. In such cases we offer payment by instalments, to keep the monthly financial burden as low as possible for you.
For patients with private insurance: your insurance contract determines what share of the costs is covered. Once the initial records have been prepared, you receive a cost estimate (Kostenvoranschlag) from us at the practice and submit it to your insurer. We wait for confirmation of cover before we begin treatment.

For adults

In the vast majority of cases adult patients pay for orthodontic treatment themselves, or reimbursement comes through private or supplementary health insurance. Combined orthodontic and jaw-surgery treatments are the exception – here statutory health insurance contributes as well. We discuss the details at the initial consultation.

Frequently asked questions about costs

What does health insurance pay towards my child's brace?
Where a misalignment needs treating and falls into KIG grade 3 or above, it covers the greater part of the treatment. What that means for your child is something we explain to you in person after the examination.
What is the KIG classification?
The orthodontic indication groups (Kieferorthopädische Indikationsgruppen, 1 to 5) describe how pronounced a misalignment is. They are regulated uniformly across Germany. From grade 3 upwards, the treatment is covered by health insurance.
What if the classification comes out at grade 1 or 2?
Then the misalignment is mild and statutory health insurance does not cover the treatment. We discuss openly with you whether treatment makes sense – and in such cases we offer payment by instalments.
What does treatment for adults cost?
For adults, treatment is usually a private service; reimbursement depends on your private or supplementary insurance. If jaw surgery is medically necessary, statutory health insurance contributes as well.
Is payment by instalments available?
Yes, paying in instalments is possible.
When will we know what to expect?
After the examination. You receive a written treatment and cost plan (Heil- und Kostenplan) before treatment begins.
Do I need a referral from my dentist?
No. You can book an appointment with us directly. If you do have a referral, feel free to bring it along.
Is the initial consultation free and without obligation?
Yes. We look at the situation, answer your questions and discuss the costs – with no obligation.
How quickly can I get an appointment?
